Empowering our Youth Against Homophobia and Bullying

Fairytales Presentation Society is best known for our nationally recognized, Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival, established in 1999. In the past few years, we have experienced exciting growth in audience diversity, size and participation, leading to establishment of OUTReels (2009), our year-round diversity education outreach program. As part of our growth, in 2011 we launched our inaugural Youth Anti-Homophobia PSA Program. The PSA Program drew writer, columnist and It Gets Better project founder, Dan Savage, to our festival in 2011. In honor of our PSA youth, Dan presented his engaging talk, "The Power of Community".  It Gets Better was founded in response to the epidemic of queer youth suicides as a result of bullying. Its time for all of us to step up, and speak out against this issue impacting so many in North America.

In this YouTube age, filmmaking really is a fantastic means of helping youth to find their voice, and discover the power of saying no - together! It all started last year, with our Youth Anti-Homophobia PSA Program mentoring young filmmakers in the process of making an effective public service announcement. The PSA's addressed homophobia, inspired in part by It Gets Better, and by the work of the Calgary Police Service & Calgary's Outlink Youth Group in raising local awareness.

The PSA Program was very successful, culminating in the public screening gala, Calgary Gets Better: One PSA at a Time, as part of the 2011 Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival. The show sold out, with over 300 in attendance to celebrate the accomplishments of these young artists! Be a part of this exciting social movement to make things better for everyone! The program is FREE for participating youth, this is why we need your support!

Impact: We will match your donation!

Our IndieGoGoal: $3000

Your Impact: Your support actually DOUBLES our goal to $6,000 - How?

THE SCOOP: We are elegible to receive an annual grant matching donations received from individuals in Alberta - the more donations we raise, the more matching funds we are elegible to receive! This is a wonderful opportunity to double the "bang for your buck" as an individual donor.

The great thing? You can donate amounts different than what the "Perks" suggest - as little or as much as fits your budget - every dollar counts! Perks are in limited quantities, so don't wait to donate!

If you are not from Alberta, we would still love your support! Although we cannot apply outside funds to our grant, we will apply them to the program! Every bit helps! Canadian Citizens are elegible for a tax receipt for donations $20 and above ("Perks" at $50+). Please note that tax deductible monies do NOT include value of the perks items, or memberships.

Why? Donations are defined as gifts that do not receive any services or items in exchange for monies given (i.e. If you donate $100 and get a Perk with a value of $50, only $50 is elegible for a tax receipt).

What We Need & What You Get

Our campaign's funds will contribute directly to the 2012 program, under the new name, Youth Queer Media Program. Participants aged 12 - 24 are invited to create short films, animations, and PSAs in all genres addressing issues facing queer youth today. Youth are taught by media and film industry professionals, and the program runs between December 2011-March 2012. Produced films will be screened at the 2012 Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival, and participants own copyrights on the works they create.

The money raised here will go directly towards paying instructor and coordinator fees, as well as to wards the hard costs of producing video in professional broadcast/festival formats. This is because we encourage youth to get their work out there! We provide assistance with submitting their works to other festivals, as part of post-secondary applications, and to broadcasters. If we meet or exceed our goal, remaining funds will supplement costs for promotion, the gala event, as well as production of DVDs, tapes and other digital formats for youth to submit or distribute works after the festival. Our goal is to ensure a top-notch experience for all involved, with learning opportunities extending beyond the program itself.

Help our youth invest in their creativity and in finding the power of community!
