La Centrale Galerie Powerhouse is asking you to support our upcoming publication, Féminismes électriques. Your pledge will allow us to cover the final costs associated with this publishing project.
THE PUBLICATION
Ten years of contemporary feminist art - the exhibitions, the debates and the performances - are coming together in a new publication from La Centrale Galerie Powerhouse, entitled Féminismes électriques. This bilingual book of 200 pages, in which the decade 2000-2010 at La Centrale is revisited, is being published in collaboration with les éditions du remue-ménage and Art Metropole. Féminismes électriques provides insight into the discourse and the trends specific to feminist art practice of the period, in both the local arts milieu as well as internationally.
Give generously, and by becoming a project donor help La Centrale Galerie Powerhouse's maintain its presence as a place of dialogue, production, and debate within contemporary feminist art. Contribute to the production of this richly diverse and prestigious publication, developed in the tradition of La Centrale's previous publications Instabili (1973-1990) and Textura (1991-1999).
Texts feature the following contributors: Leila Pourtavaf, Helena Reckitt, Thérèse St-Gelais, Trish Salah, Bernadette Houde, Aneessa Hashmi and Roxanne Arsenault. Also included are conversations between Onya Hogan-Finlay and Chris Kraus, Reena Katz and Jumana Manna, as well as Stéphanie Chabot and Dominique Pétrin with Manon Tourigny. The graphic design of the publication is realized by Cecilia Berkovic.
The book will be launched in March 2012
What We Need & What You Get
La Centrale has already raised a major part of the publication's budget, now we require $5,000 to complete the job. All the money raised will go directly to the publication of the book and to its promotion. With your help, your pledge will finance the printing of the book ($4,000), its distribution ($500), and will help market and promote it to a wider audience ($500) throughout 2012.
Please take a look at the wonderful perks you will receive when you make your pledge!
WHY THIS PROJECT NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT
La Centrale is committed to ensuring the work of contemporary artists is available to generations to come. We think this book will be a wonderful resource:
- providing a conceptual framework for recent shifts in feminist theory
- exploring the impact of feminism on younger artists
- contributing to an understanding of the role of art within the context of resistance to war and occupation
- explaining aspects of the history and impacts of queer feminist practices in contemporary art
- providing an overview of the programming and major events that have taken place at La Centrale during the years 2000-2010
- creating a new artist’s project through the inclusion of an original poster by the notorious Toronto artist GB Jones.
LA CENTRALE'S MANDATE
Growing out of the feminist art movement and founded in 1973, La Centrale Galerie Powerhouse is one of the oldest artist-run centers in Quebec. La Centrale is a non-profit organization incorporated on May 24, 1974 in Québec, under the official name Galerie et atelier La Centrale électrique/Powerhouse Gallery & Studio. The center's mandate expands on a history of feminist art practices and engages a broad spectrum of underrepresented artists and initiatives within established art institutions. The gallery aims to provide a platform for contemporary art informed by feminist and gender theory, as well as intercultural and transdisciplinary practices. This involves networking and developing professional exchanges at the local, national and international levels. We promote the work of artists at all stages of their careers to allow for intergenerational dialogue. In 2007-2008, our mandate was updated to reflect the inclusive interests of the center, and to better align ourselves with contemporary feminisms.
