Our Story
This project began when our writer, Kevin Miller, was on a hike with a soldier who had served a couple of tours in Afghanistan. The soldier told Kevin several fascinating stories about the war, details seldom heard in the news. One of those details lodged in Kevin's brain, the concept of a "drop gun."
To put it simply, a drop gun is something used to cover up the accidental killing of a civilian. If you kill the wrong person, simply place a weapon in their hands, and they instantly go from civilian to insurgent. Not a pleasant reality, but a reality nonetheless according to Kevin's source.
It wasn't until three years later when Kevin was strolling through London one sunny afternoon that the idea of doing a short film based on the the concept of a drop gun occurred to him. Originally, he was going to make it his directorial debut. But as luck would have it, right after he outlined the story, Magnus Persson contacted Kevin looking for a script to direct as his film school graduate thesis project. The timing couldn't have been better. They have been collaborating on the story ever since.
The Impact
First and foremost, this film will help Magnus graduate from film school. He's a talented filmmaker, whose work can be seen in several short films as well as in the feature documentary With God On Our Side. By supporting this film, you are supporting the development of a budding, young artist.
Second, this film has the potential to make viewers ask some hard questions about war, ethics and their own culpability in actions and events occurring halfway around the world. Most North Americans live lives of relative ease and comfort, completely oblivious to the difficult, life and death decisions our troops must make every day in order to ensure their security. It's easy to criticize these decisions from the safety of home. It's quite another thing to be there and realize in some cases, there simply are no good choices. One of the goals of this film is to put viewers on the ground with the soldiers so they can experience this reality for themselves.
Drop Gun is not a pro-war film, and it's not an anti-war film. It merely attempts to grapple with the seemingly irresolvable dilemmas that soldiers often face on the front lines.
