Disconnect
My name is Kevin Kunze and I'm an independent filmmaker and activist. I first became interested in cell phones and the possible negative health effects when I met Ellie Marks, who's husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor based on his 22 years of mobile phone use. This was just the tip of the iceberg for me...
I read Disconnect, a book about the history of cell phones and radiation by Dr. Devra Davis, a Nobel Prize winner and National Book Award Finalist and it got me to thinking... Davis' background ranges from Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation under President Clinton's administration (199499) to her work with Al Gore as Lead Author on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. In the book, Davis paints a powerful and compelling argument on the health risks of cell phone health.
With her support and collaboration, I began working on a documentary about the health risks of cell phone usage and the on going controversy and lawsuits that have followed the industry since 1993.
Recently, San Francisco's 'Right to Know' cell phone safety law, which informs consumers about protective ways to use your phone, was voted into law 10 to 1 by District Supervisors and Mayor Gavin Newsom on June 15th, 2010. The law was quickly repealed when the Cellular Telecommunications Industry threatened to sue the city and pulled it's eight million dollar technology convention from San Francisco.
Interviews in the documentary include neurological doctors, professors, and researchers from Yale, Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSF, and UCSD. In addition, technology experts such as Apple co-founder, Steve Wozniak and California Senators Mark Leno and Leland Yee.
Debbie Raphael, Director of the Department of Toxic Substances Control for California's Environmental Protection Agency and senior scientists at the Environmental Health Trust and Environmental Working Group were also interviewed.
The Impact
Over the past two decades, the world has witnessed an incredible rise in the use of cellular telephones. Society has advanced from primarily business executives using cell phones in the 1980s, to over 5 billion users today. In every country and across all walks of life, including the children and the elderly, cell phones are pervasive. Since the beginning, there was always talk of cell phone radiation and the possibility it could cause cancer. As cell phone use reaches even greater heights, this debate has intensified. Those who believe cell phones are causing harmful sides effect are primarily the environment health groups and researchers who have found data that suggests a strong link.
This documentary could change the way 4.6 billion people use their cell phones. Additionally, it could save numerous adults and children from brain tumors, as well as several other health problems associated with cell phone radiation, including DNA damage, blood-brain barrier damage, breast cancer, sperm reduction and infertility.
By giving voice to those who've suffered brain tumors and sued the cell phone companies over this issue, but have yet to see their day in court, this film provides information not covered in the mainstream media.
What We Need & What You Get
If you fund this film you are not only helping myself but billions of people around the world who use cell phones everyday. Please help me by raising awareness about this critical issue, whether donating a dollar or just talking about it with others.By unleashing the DIWO (Do It With Others) I believe this health risk can finally reach the level of media exposure it truly deserves. Everyone uses cellphones everyday but does anyone know the actual harm of doing so? Or an even better question...does anyone really care?
Thank you very much for the help, support and time,
Kevin Kunze
