Dig Deeper is a feature length documentary in the early stage of
production. It revolves around a unique monthly live soul music
event held in Brooklyn, New York. The events are organized by two
friends who are both rare soul record collectors and
DJs-turned-promoters by default.
This coming October, we have the opportunity to film their biggest
event of the year: The Brooklyn Soul Festival. Over two
days we will capture six obscure soul artists and musicians- some of
whom have not performed in New York in forty years, while other
talented artists will be reunited for the first time in as many years.
One not-to-be-missed performer, Barbara Lynn, has been playing
guitar since high school, she first learned (as did Hendrix) to play
southpaw style upside down on a right handed guitar.
It is a glimpse into a rarefied era in American music history, and a
unique opportunity to see these artists- many of whom, sadly, have
never received royalties, despite their esteem or current value- get
some of their due, or at the very least, be in a room with a
rapturous, supportive audience. The many personal stories of
performing in the 1960s, recording with the greats, and growing up
during changing times, enrich the backdrop to their onstage (and
backstage) tales.
This is an overlooked, yet extremely relevant aspect of American
musical history that should be captured before more artists of the
genre are gone. The documentary becomes further personalized by
witnessing the promoters passion and vision coming to fruition,
despite their challenges in locating the artists, and witnessing the
final reward of seeing some of these storied performers live for the
first time.
To date, we have filmed, out of pocket, three performers (shown in the
teaser trailer), so this upcoming event will be a climactic and a crucial element
to the documentary. In just under two weeks, we have the
near-impossible task of raising sufficient funds to capture this epic
event. It will be the most expensive shoot of the documentary, with
multiple hi-definition cameras and three to four days of shooting.
This event is imperative to the success of the documentary.
September 29th is our fast approaching deadline to raise $10,000, and
all donations made are tax deductible through our
non-profit fiscal sponsor, Fractured Atlas.
Please, please help us reach our goal and spread the word. Send this
out to anyone you know- music lovers, dj's, friends, family, people at
work... anyone at all that might be able to help us. Everything counts as we
have such a short time to get there.
This is a true labor of love, and we are so grateful for your support. thank you.
