After surviving Hurricane Katrina, an ex-stripper, DAKOTA DODGE, who is white, carries the burden of raising a spunky black girl, DOVE JEFFRIES, and they are at complete odds with each other. They are relocated to Chicago, where they meet TOBIE, a man whos been isolated from society for seventeen years because of Proteus Syndrome, which has afflicted him with a monstrous looking face. Through Tobie, Dakota and Dove will learn that ugliness and beauty is a first reaction, but whats really important is the human being under the skin. This message comes full circle at the end of the movie when its revealed that Tobie is a woman.
