The Story

You're into new music, right?  Wait, you're a saxophonist too?  Then this is the campaign for you!  Sean Murphy, a Slippery Rock University graduate (2011) and soon-to-be University of North Texas grad student, is is commissioning composer Stephen Barr to write a new work for saxophone and piano!

The best part?  You're invited to join in!  If you're a supporter of fresh, new music, we want you to contribute to this project!  If you play saxophone and are looking for new literature to perform, this is your campaign!

Here's the deal: Stephen will compose a new work for saxophonist Sean Murphy.  The work will be premiered during the 2011-12 academic year by Sean.  But furthermore, all contributors who donate at the $30 level or above will also have exclusive rights to perform the new work for a year from the date of Sean's premiere performance -- this includes any and all venues, as many as you want, with rights to make recordings, upload audio and video of performances, everything!  The work will not be published or made available to other interested parties until the year's time has expired.

You can check out Stephen's work at www.stephenbarr.com.

What We Need & What You Get

What Sean needs is your help in raising the commission fee for a new piece of this scope.  All money raised will go towards Stephen's commissioning fee of $1500.

Here's an important point: even if the full $1500 isn't raised, the piece still gets written!  So if you donate at the $30 level or above, you will still have rights to performance and so forth.  The goal is to raise as much of the commissioning fee here before alternative sources of funding are explored.  We hope the Internet social community, all you lovers of new music, and all of you saxophone players out there will be as into this as we are!  Any amount will help!

The Impact

We've already said the piece gets written even if our goal of $1500 isn't reached, so you may be asking yourself, "Then why should I contribute?"

It's pretty straight forward: commissioning new music costs money.  Composers make their living in part by writing, the same way journalists, novelists, screenwriters, and others do.  If this campaign is a success, it will encourage performers and composers like Sean and Steve to work together and with others in the future to create and perform more new works of music.  Your contribution is providing the needed assistance to bring new music commissions to life.

So, what are you waiting for?  $30 gets you on board to commission and perform the new work!
