Cobell v. is a sponsored project of International Documentary Association.

Our Story

In 2002, filmmaker Melinda Janko of Fire in the Belly Productions went looking for a story to tell and found a  small article in Mother Jones magazine about  Elouise Cobell's fight for justice for 500,000 Native Americans whose mineral rich lands were mismanaged by the US Government.  Oil wells and natural gas pumped 24/7 on their government managed property yet most Indian landowners could not afford running water or electricity.  Shocked and appalled by what she read, Melinda set out on a journey which led to Cobell v., a feature length documentary about one woman's fight for justice and the largest class action lawsuit ever filed against the US Government. Today 120 hours of  footage has been shot in 8 states.

Fast forward to December 8, 2010, when, after 14 years of litigation President Obama, signed the $3.4 billion Cobell Settlement Act, ending 123 years of injustice for 500,000 Native Americans! It was BIG NEWS.....it was HISTORIC.... and it gave Cobell v., an ending to the story!

With this historic news, Fire in the Belly Productions started looking for an Army of Angels to help raise the finishing funds to tell this powerful story. Now here's where you come in! If you like stories about triumph of the human spirit, and people overcoming great odds, then you'll love this one.  We think the world will love it too and we have 3 letters of interest from theatrical distributors who agree.  Here's how it works.

The Impact

The Impact of a successful crowd funding campaign for Cobell v. will reach all around the world. With this film we are not only documenting an important piece of American history but we are also showing (a picture is worth a thousand words,) what happens when a government turns against the people. We'll be honoring the courageous efforts of Elouise Cobell, a woman Warrior, and honoring all those Indians who "died waiting for justice." This case will be studied in the courts and law schools for centuries and the film will serve as an excellent educational tool. We also plan to show it to members of Congress. We've interviewed plenty of them!

If we do not succeed in our crowd funding campaign we could lose the opportunity to "make a difference in the world," and prevent this type of injustice from happening again.  Justice delayed (123 years) is justice denied and this film will show the harsh reality of "waiting for justice."

What We Need & What You Get

Here's what we need.  Cobell v. is a feature length doc. We were 12 weeks in the post-production process when the economy came to a grinding halt....and so did our funding dollars.  But we never gave up. We are passionate about this story and won't rest until we see it on the big screen!  While we are seeking $250,500 from major grants to cover the post-production costs of: editors, off-line equipment, graphics, and special effects, we are focusing our Indiegogo campaign on the $20,000 that we need for editing and music. If we don't reach our goal we jeopardize our chance to meet the deadlines for the Sundance and the Cannes Film Festivals.

So please WATCH the 3 minute trailer, (see the exciting news at the end)  DONATE to the film and SHARE this with your friends. You'll be a part of history in the making!

Our other option (as I said, we won't rest until it's done) is to approach potential investors. (If that's you, we have a 56 page business plan we'd love to share with you.) Please contact Melinda at
(858) 521-0559 to discuss.

Now here's what you get.  To start off with, a tax deduction! Cobell v. is a fiscally sponsored project of the International Documentary Association (IDA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization.  In addition, you get some PRETTY COOL PERKS, like your name on the website and in the film credits!  If you choose not to take the perks and want the full tax deduction, just indicate that.

Those of you who always wanted to be a part of film making, here's your chance. We'll update you during the campaign with video clips, and announcements and invite you to give us your feedback. We even offer you an opportunity to join us on location or walk with us on the Red Carpet!!!  Anyone who contributes will have their name automatically entered in a drawing for an all expense paid trip for 2 to attend the Premiere!

Other Ways You Can Help

If you can't contribute, that's okay, here are some other options: get the word out to all your friends and family via Facebook and email. You are on Facebook with the rest of the world, right? Our goal is to reach over 500,000 people! Fund raising is a numbers game so please send it out with your endorsement.  We have a Facebook Fan Page and Twitter account and some cool "Share" buttons (above) that let you share it with everyone. Please sign up for updates on our website www.cobellvmovie.com and add your zip code so when the film is released you can help us organize a screening in your area.
