Synopsis:

‘Changing the World on Vacation’ is a social-impact documentary that explores the controversial trend “Volun-tourism” (the merger of adventure travel and aid work) by following an American grassroots NGO in Cambodia that built a school for 540 children in a rural village and financially sustains this project through volunteer-travelers. With intimate access to the president of the grassroots NGO, the film uncovers the personal and political potholes that stand in the way of doing aid work responsibly and joins three groups of volunteers on their trips to Cambodia, contrasting the life-changing effects of their own journey and their impact for the local communities.
The film furthers an inclusive dialogue for more sustainable aid practices, highlighting the potential and dangers of Volun-tourism (the largest growing segment in the tourism and non-profit industry) and is a catalyst for discussion that raises crucial questions about the nature of giving and our individual potential to be activists for change.

What makes Changing the World on Vacation - NGO's and The Politics of Compassion different:  The film unveils the ‘inconvenient truths’ about global aid, is fully shot in Cambodia over the course of one year and features international development workers and volunteers in their mid 20's from 14 different countries. It conveys the behind-the scenes politics of humanitarian aid to a younger and wider audience than any other film about aid work has before. Affiliated NGOs and their international volunteer bases that have been dedicated followers from the film’s conception comprise a primary audience of over 4000 people. The International Department of Tourism Studies at the George Washington University utilizes the film’s selects reel in lectures and the latest cut of the documentary will open a conference on 'Sustainable Aid and Volun-tourism' in Sweden hosted by SDGI (Sustainable Development Group International). The film tells the story of a group of people who set out to change the world and find out what it really takes - taking audiences on an introspective journey in search of how to transform good intentions into good outcomes.

deedadocs (Sun Dec 23 '07)

‘Changing the World on Vacation’ defies what we think we know about humanitarian aid efforts. It posts a challenge to the way NGOs perform and will be a vital catalyst for discussions in households, classrooms, political and community forums worldwide. It exposes the moral complexity and boundaries of sustainability and will allow citizens and policymakers to re-think their individual potential to “make a difference”, and help to reformulate more effective strategies for lasting social and environmental changes in the future.

Very good point about volunteering being only a start--projects need to be long-term. Life goes on after the volunteer goes home. Projects need to be sustainable.
