Synopsis: Changing the World on Vacation chronicles the struggle of a grassroots NGO in Cambodia for sustainability through Volun-tourism, the controversial new trend in the non-profit world that merges adventure travel and humanitarian aid work. We join international volunteer-travelers on a life-changing journey to the poorest country in South East Asia with the start-up NGO PEPY that offers volunteer vacations to the school they built for 540 children in a rural village. During one year, the team confronts the moral, personal and political potholes that stand in the way of doing aid work responsibly and wrestles with a lack of research, disloyal allegiances, corruption and cultural differences. Juxtaposing the effects of PEPY’s mission for the local community, the volunteers and NGO staff, reveals an array of divergent perspectives in this exclusive look into the behind-the scenes politics of humanitarian aid and the subjectivity that motivates the goals, the conduct and mistakes of NGOs.

What makes Changing the World on Vacation - NGO Volunteers and The Politics of Compassion different?
The film unveils the ‘inconvenient truths’ about global aid, is fully shot in Cambodia over the course of one year and features international development workers and volunteers in their mid 20's from 14 different countries. This allows the documentary to convey the behind-the scenes politics of humanitarian aid to a younger and wider audience than any other film about aid work has before and permits theatrical, television and DVD distribution to a world-wide market. Affiliated NGOs and their international volunteer bases that have been dedicated followers from the film’s conception comprise a primary audience of over 4000 people. The International Department of Tourism Studies at the George Washington University already utilizes the film’s selects reel in lectures and think tanks, which markets it to a target audience and highlights the critical impact of the documentary and advances its distribution potential for global educational forums, non and governmental agents.

| ‘Changing the World on Vacation’ defies what we think we know about humanitarian aid efforts. It posts a challenge to the way NGOs perform and will be a vital catalyst for discussions in households, classrooms, political and community forums worldwide. It exposes the moral complexity and boundaries of sustainability and will allow citizens and policymakers to re-think their individual potential to “make a difference”, and help to reformulate more effective strategies for lasting social and environmental changes in the future. |
