39 year old Josh Kermes’ life is thrown into disarray when the director of the tutoring center he tutors for hires some new help despite tough times. His name is Shivam Shah, and he happens to be the person who won the spelling bee Josh had lost many years ago. Chaos and competition ensues in this quirky short dramedy, and culminates in an ultimate showdown between man and word: Will Josh overcome the word that took him down?
So far, I’ve saved about $10,000 of my own money from teaching humanities and creative writing courses at universities across NJ as an adjunct instructor.
Perks for donating range from a social media shout out ($10), T-shirts and signed DVDs ($50) to Associate Producer ($100) or Executive Producer ($500) credit in the film and exclusive invites to the set and private screenings of Cerise.

Here’s a recap of my week-long shoot and what’s next.
Day One: 5/16: Our first day of shooting was fairly easy. We shot in the auditorium of the New Jersey School of Dramatic Arts in Bloomfield from 1pm to 6pm, and had a great dinner courtesy of Two Guys Pizza & Grill (my brother Walter’s restaurant).
Day Two: 5/17: After a very successful day shooting very Glass Menagerie-esque memory scenes, we unloaded our lighting and camera equipment into the Josh Kermes’s pad (the apartment of Vincent D’Onofrio, colleague, playwright, and friend of mine) that night, and after breakfast on the hood of one of our PA’s cars, we shot all day Monday canning all the scenes of Josh in his dark, nostalgia-ridden apartment by about 9pm.
Day Three: 5/18: On Tuesday, Production Team Cerise shot at The Warehouse CafĂ©, a quaint little spot in the historic Powerhouse Art District in Downtown Jersey City. The Warehouse was an especially important location because the final scene of the Cerise happens there. By the fifth or sixth take of Josh and C.J.‘s closeup, a tiny tear glassed my eyes and a smile bloomed like none before, and I knew then I’d struck a moment that would not soon be forgotten.
Day Four: 5/19: Wednesday and Thursday proved a true test to not only myself, but to everyone on the crew of Cerise. We shot both days at New Jersey City University. Wednesday was a grueling day both physically and emotionally; we unfortunately had to lose a few shots, and I could feel my exasperation welling up after lunch. We made it through, however, with minimal scars.
Day Five: 5/20: Then came Thursday, and we had 14 hours to shoot ten pages of the script! With Corey calculating and Alain practically painting a new magnum opus with every shot; with our production designer, makeup artist and hairstylist brushing and dabbing from 60 to sonic boom; with our tireless PAs scrambling to and fro for this or that, we were (somehow) able to pull it all together and churn out a product like some oily piston-pumping machine…but I gotta tell you, it was crazy!
A Glimpse Ahead: What’s Next for Cerise? I’m hoping to have a very rough cut by the end of June to show a test screening for the cast and crew. After that, I’ll be tweaking the picture edit a bit more extensively, and then I’ll send the edit off for audio and music mixing, and we’ll take it from there.

Hey Team Cerise!
I hope everybody’s having an amazing week because our week has been beyond fantastic!
- On MONDAY, we received the T-shirts for our “Use in a Sentence” backers. Thanks to Jerry Cavallaro for tipping us off on the awesome deal that Merchspin.com was having (saved us a lot of money!)
- On TUESDAY (exactly 2 weeks after we made our goal), another kind-hearted movie fan found our little project on IndieGoGo and contributed a generous amount! Thank you, Eric Damon Walters, and welcome to Team Cerise!
- YESTERDAY, our ever-supportive friend, Jerry Cavallaro donated to Cerise! Once again, thank you Jerry!
- TODAY, John and I were featured on IndieGoGo’s 6Q series talking about how we reached our $5,000 goal:
“From selling poems as perks to video blogging their funding progress, Team Cerise knows what it takes to engage an audience, find new fans and mobilize them into funders. " Check it out if you missed it:
http://www.indiegogo.com/blog/2010/04/6q-with-j...
Thanks to IndieGoGo founders Slava Rubin and Danae Ringelmann for giving us the opportunity to share our GoGo experience with everyone.
Another bit of awesome news came as a surprise. We received an email from Ben Gerber, one of our backers (who’s getting an “Executive Producer” credit in the film), saying that he has registered the domain www.cerisemovie.com for us. In his words, “a great movie is going to need a great domain name ;-)” This is very kind of you, Ben! Thank you very much for everything!
For now, this domain name will direct you to our Facebook page until we get a website made :) Also, today we’ve officially finalized our cast, locked in 2 locations, and got an awesome editor on board!
WHEW! We can’t wait for the weeks ahead. As days go by, we are becoming more confident that we’ve got a great team that will give all of you an amazing finished product! On behalf of John and the rest of the cast and crew, we thank you for standing by us.
Gratitude, love, and happy dances,
Marinell |

We’ve said it many times and we’re saying it again – THANK YOU! We are currently $200 over our goal and we can’t thank you enough for helping us get to this point! Thanks again!
Also, if you haven’t already, make sure that you “become a fan” of the Cerise Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/CeriseMovie) so you are in the loop of what’s been going on. We’ve got the t-shirts coming in soon for our backers who pledged $50+ (checkout a mockup of what the shirt will look like on our Facebook page). Plus, John talks about the Cerise fundraising campaign in the latest issue of MicroFilmmaker Magazine: http://bit.ly/ciPUZ1 (also on our FB page).
Thanks again everyone! More updates to come. |

Hi Team Cerise!
We hope you guys watched and enjoyed our latest video blog update. Let’s all congratulate Zak Forsman, Renee Faris, and Andres Jaramillo for winning our Facebook page raffle! If you haven’t seen the video, watch it now to find out what special gift awaits you! Make sure you send John a message (via email, FB, or Twitter) with your address so he can send you your gift as soon as possible. Thank you to everyone else for becoming a fan of our Facebook page!
Also, congratulations to Andrew Bichler for winning our tagline contest! Andrew got the most votes for his tagline “A color by any other name would spell defeat,” and he won a DVD copy of “The Coconut” and “The Hotel Edwards.” Congrats, Andrew!
Another great news is that we are inches away from becoming fully-funded! $150 more and “Cerise” is an IndieGoGo success story! Thank you for your continued support. Please help us reach our goal by April 3rd (five days from now) which will be exactly 2 months since we launched the Cerise fund-raising campaign.
Until then, let’s keep painting the town cerise! :) Have a great Monday! |
