Our Story

After meeting and working together at NYU and the Stella Adler Studio, Stacy Osei-Kuffour and Michael Sutherland have continued the partnership by producing, co-directing and performing Stacy's original plays.  We have strived to perform work with socially relevant ideas, and the plays have looked at themes of race and gender identity and serve to really put out important and provocative thoughts.  The most recent project, The Painter, was a finalist in the 2011 Samuel French OOB festival, (13 out 1000+) which Exeunt magazine called "a powerful and suspenseful drama"  (7/27/11).  Previous work together includes an earlier workshop of Breathless at the Downtown Urban Theater Festival, The Painter at the Strawberry Festival, a reading of Red Red with On the Square Productions, and In the Evening at the Stella Adler Studio.

The Impact

Breathless is a look at race in current America.  Seen from the point of view of a white wannabe thug, and a proper suburban black woman together on a train, we reverse the stereotypes and bring up questions of culture, and what it is that makes us all human.  It's play that comes from the heart for us, and we feel is really important for people to see.  We've been given a great opportunity by the Dream Up festival, to have the Johnson Theater at Theater for the New City, where we can reach a larger audience than we've had in the past.  This is play where we can really engage perceptions and prejudice and hopefully make an impact on a controversial topic that needs to be addressed.

"This is a beautiful play, that starts with a shocking reversal, proceeds through real terror, and arrives at an
unexpected beauty.  A beautifully written two-character adventure, played by two wonderful actors."

-Austin Pendleton, award-winning actor, director and playwright

What We Need & What You Get

Until now every show we've done has come out of our own pockets and the set and props out of our apartments.  This is obviously a strain on two young actors, and everything raised here will help.  Specifically we have to cover the costs of the festival rental/participation fee, acquiring costumes and props, to offer compensation to members of the team we need to hire to run lights and sound, stage manage, and to print materials such as postcards to help spread the word about the show.

Obviously this is a tough time economically, but raising funds here ensures that we can continue to move forward doing plays that try to make a difference.  Through generous help from friends, we've been able to come up with some great rewards help us say thank you.

Other Ways You Can Help

Please spread the word to others you know through facebook, twitter and even google+!  Though the show happens in New York, supporting the theatre is important everywhere.  Pass it along and keep real theatre alive.
