The debut feature film from acclaimed documentarian Joseph Mathew Varghese (Crossing Arizona), Bombay Summer explores the fleeting friendship between three young people in contemporary India. The film stars BAFTA nominated actress Tannishtha Chatterjee (Brick Lane; Road, Movie).
At the center of the story is Geeta (Chatterjee), a middle-class magazine editor adept at balancing the demands of career and family. She is having an affair with Jaidev (Samrat Chakrabarti), a struggling writer from a wealthy upper-class background. Their lives take a dramatic turn when they befriend Madan (Jatin Goswami), a young migrant artist who occasionally resorts to crime to make ends meet.
Bombay Summer has been warmly received by audiences at film festivals around the world, including Filmfest Hamburg, the International Film Festival of India, and the Middle East International Film Festival. At the 2009 Mahindra Indo American Arts Council Film Festival it won awards for Best Film, Best Actress, and Best Director. Acclaimed filmmaker Deepa Mehta has called it a fascinating journey into a known yet unfamiliar worldaccomplished.
Shot over 30 days in Mumbai on a shoestring budget, Bombay Summer is an Indie Film in the truest sense. That means that, while we were able to scrape together money for production and post-production, we now have nothing left to pay for the marketing, publicity and other costs associated with our North American theatrical run. This IndieGoGo campaign is an integral part of our strategy to raise the funds needed to get Bombay Summer up on a few big screens so that it can be properly enjoyed by a broader audience.
