Legend of Black Lotus, is fantasy short film project. Written in the spirit of _Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon with mysticism and enchantment. It will showcase themes of destiny, faith, sacrifice and martial-arts combat. I like to refer to the project as a re-telling of the legend of Mulan , with a twist.
Legend of Black Lotus tells the story of an African American child born to Chinese in Ancient China. According to a little-known legend, the child is the gift of the magical Black Forest and will rise to become ruler by defeating the tyrannical emperor. However, because of her skin color the child is condemned and forced into slavery. However, the Queen secretly trains the young girl until she becomes old enough and skilled enough to fulfill her destiny. But when the emperor plans to destroy the forest, which is the source of the girl’s strength, the child must find a way to connect with the magic of the forest, harness her supernatural gifts and defeat the emperor.
People who have seen my films know that I am a big fan of movies with big stories. Legend of Black Lotus is no different. It incorporates the dramatic, multi-layered storytelling similar to Wong Kar Wei films. I like to give my actors something to sink their teeth into, so despite the amazing martial arts sequences I have planned the film will touch audiences on an emotional level as well. The film incorporates drama, suspense, martial arts, and themes of sacrifice and themes of destiny.
What I’ve figured is this: if just 80% of my Facebook, Twitter and Myspace Friends contributed $5 I would have enough to make my film. It’s as easy as skipping a Venti Latte from Starbucks for a day or contributing the small balance in you PayPal account.
As a supporter for Legend of Black Lotus you will not be disappointed. This project is the culmination of my experience garnered over 14 films in nearly a decade. Also, as a supporter you will receive many cool perks in exchange for your contribution.
Although the project is a short film, Legend of Black Lotus is the biggest film project I’ve ever worked on because it is a means to get the concept in front of studios and productions companies in order to get the big budget to make a feature film. Basically, the short film will be used to show the potential look and feel of the proposed feature film.

My brain has started to work in overdrive now. I’m looking at ways to get more bang for my buck with the budget and I think I have a way to do it, and make the most of the better locations I plan to get.
Infrastructure is nearly complete. Web site will be launched soon (look for the update on http://www.indiegogo.com/legend-of-black-lotus). Next week I’ll be working on delivery of some of the contributor perks that qualify for an early delivery. |

Hey folks,
Tomorrow I meet with Gabriel Diniz, the DP who’ll be shooting “Legend of Black Lotus.” It’s an impromptu meeting to discuss what camera we’ll be using (we’re thinking RED ONE) and the overall look for the film. It’s funny because we’re meeting at Chace Park in Marina del Rey. I live borderline to the O.C. and Gabe lives in the valley so we’re meeting halfway. Also, I don’t have a babysitter so I’m bringing my kids - all four of them. They’ll play in the park as Gabe and I chat it up. Hey, you do what you gotta do, right?! :)
Other news: A friend put me in touch with composer. I told him I had a composer in mind already. Then he and I got to chatting about films. If you’ve had a chance to watch my films (http://www.AngeloBell.com/Channel) you’ll see that emotion is a big part of my writing style. He had good things to say about my film “Broken Hearts Club,” which by the way is available on iTunes as an APP.
Anyway, in the concept trailers for Black lotus I tried to convey how I’ll use emotion in the film. Apparently I struck a chord with this composer. He’s going to write something for the film as a freebie, just to express his feelings about the film, the theme and the concept. I think that’s pretty cool.

Hey Folks!
It’s been a busy week, month, couple of months and I’ve finally gotten time to relax and plan a forward strategy.
As you know, the Indiegogo campaign ended a few days ago and the project reached about 20% of its funding. I’m grateful for that because along with that money came sincere interest from many people who want to see this project made. So, we’re moving right along!
First order of business is to discuss the postponement of the shooting schedule. Originally I’d planned a festival strategy that stemmed from shooting the film during the last week of July. This would leave ample time for editing and post production, with enough time to meet the submission deadlines for major festivals in 2011. However, as I work on other funding options it’s necessary to push the schedule back. The new schedule is October 1-9th
This postponement is timely because activity on my other projects has picked up. Additionally, we have ample time for set design, wardrobe fittings, hair and make-up tests and rehearsals.
The Key Hair and Make-up person is Stacey Miller, whom I was lucky to hire for four of my film projects. Wardrobe will be handled by Faith Rosander; Faith expertly managed the wardrobe needs for my rom-com “Broken Hearts Club.” Production design/art direction will be coordinated by Reed Johns and Claudia Craciun who did a brilliant job working on “Resurrection of Serious Rogers.” This week I meet with Gabriel Diniz, an award-winning DP, whom I’ve worked with on four film projects. I’ll also be meeting with a potential storyboard artist. I’ve also hired a composer to write an original score for the film. And of course, my First AD is Kevin Huie. Kevin and I have worked together on probably seven films.
Here’s what else is happening: an industry professional read “Legend of Black Lotus” and strongly suggested I enter the screenplay into the Slamdance screenwriting competition. After I submitted the script I discovered that the short script contest winner has their screenplay produced by Slamdance in time for the 2011 film festival in January. If LOBL won, Slamdance would fund the production and the cast/crew would be in chilling in Park City,UT — adjacent to the Sundance Film Festival — for Slamdance, which is arguable the most fun festival on the West Coast.

I want to share some inspiring news:
My film “Broken Hearts Club” which was adapted into a six-part series was selected by NBC Universal to air in their top 10 region, NEW YORK CITY on WNBC!
Out of hundreds of independent series, “Broken Hearts Club” was greenlighted as a test series. If the series does well NBC will roll it out to other regions. If it does really well, the series may get picked up for a second season!
I expect even bigger things from “Legend of Black Lotus.” So please help me spread the word. Every dollar counts. Tell a friend about “Legend of Black Lotus.” Even $5, which amounts to skipping a grande mocha latte from Starbucks helps immensely. |
