It had everything against it:
Its origin was linked to Hitler.
It was built in a bombed-out factory.
It ignored public taste.
It was small. It was ugly. It was different.
And a tiny New York City ad agency in 1959, had the gall to EMPHASIZE these traits in a revolutionary campaign. The minds at Doyle Dane & Bernbach drew attention to what some saw as the shortcomings of the little VW beetle. Their simple, honest ads with a twist blew the doors off the status quo and caught the imagination of the public.
The car nobody wanted became the car everybody had to have. It became a household name, the family member in the garage, and the biggest selling car in history.
It became… The BUG. It was a machine ahead of its time.
Bitten by the Bug! is a road trip to re-visit this phenoms past, down the streets of pop culture, counter culture, and around the block of the ground-breaking advertising campaign that introduced the VW Beetle to the world and made her contagious.
Along for the ride are a few eccentric and fascinating beetle-maniacs, whose hopes and dreams are reflected in the shine of their rebuilt, redesigned, reborn Bugs.
Bitten by the Bug! tells the tale of 70 years of pop cultural history from the view of those who built, sold, drove, loved, and are now re-inventing, what has become an icon and probably, the most beloved automobile of all time.
