Baja All Exclusive, The Other Face of Residential Resort Developments in Baja California Sur is an investigative documentary film by Carmina Valiente which attempts to answer the following questions:
Are tourism and residential tourism projects placing Baja California Sur on a
socially and ecologically sustainable avenue of economic development?
How are the local people and their communities being affected by an influx
of foreign visitors, part-time residents, and real estate investors?
How are the marine and coastal ecosystems holding up in the face of the
construction of new marinas and golf courses, an increased rate of sports
fishing, the entrance of cruise ships, and other tourism-related activities?
While the economic development generated by the large influx of foreign real
estate investors and tourists is significant to the local economy, upon deeper
investigation it is questionable how it truly benefits everyone equally. Dozens of large-scale resort-residential developments are being built over thousands
of acres of coastline. There is no
statewide or region-wide plan or vision to assure that this massive growth is
environmentally sustainable.
The Gulf of California or The Sea of Cortez is known for being one of the
richest marine ecosystems in the world but there is increasing concern what the
building of marinas and the massification of the tourism could do to destroy these
fragile ecosystems. There are also an issues posed by the lack of natural resources available in
this arid land necessary to maintain a large number of visitors and new
residents, especially when it comes to fresh water. Many Baja
Californians already lack access to potable water due to its scarcity.
Both developers and investors are focused
solely on their return on investment and have no incentive to look at the
long-term impact on the community or ecology of the area. The film brings
awareness to what seasonal visitors to Baja California and buyers of real
estate will have to consider as they take advantage of the setting and beauty
of the area.
