A CELLAR DOOR PICTURES PRODUCTION
Our Story
Craig begins his first day working at a record store jadedand bored, but as the day goes on and he meets the zany
crew, he realizes that he has discovered a world far
greater than he had imagined.
FUTURE ADVENTURES IN SEASON 1
Babel Records is a story about a record store that exists in modern times, and it struggling trying to stay afloat in the current economy. The perspective comes from the bottom level grunt employees, who for the most part are unaware of the stores troubles until the end.
Main plot points
Main character Craig battles with learning to become a responsible person, while at the same time expanding his horizons on pop culture. Over the course of the season, his co-workers become increasingly more impressed with how much he learns and grows as a person, and is gradually accepted further and further into their circle, which becomes like a second family to him.
Kelly acts as a mentor and father figure to Craig, shows him the ropes of the music industry.
There unfolds a plot among the higher ups at the company to try and get the character Jamie fired, or to quit.
A bet is placed between Kelly and Joe (the store manager) on how long Craig will last at the store, with control of the stores play stock for a month set up as the prize to the victor. This branches out into a mini feud that arcs over the course of the season.
The character Akemi battles with the prejudices of her parents and society at large on being a gay woman. She gets sent to Straight Camp by her parents, later escapes and is now estranged from her entire family. Akemi and Craig split an apartment. This is the first time either of them have ever lived on their own, and both need to learn responsibility the hard way.
A well known band is brought into the store in an attempt to drum up business. Lots of prep work goes into the event, but it ultimately falls flat. Kelly is aghast that more people did not show up for the band (which he loves) and Joe is aghast that the event did not bring in more business. The band plays their heart out, just because they love to play, and dont care if the crowd is 5 people, or 5 hundred.
Kelly attempts to thwart a massive robbery in progress at the store, but hilariously fails when he leaps on top of the perps car as its driving away, in a legendary moment that the employees of the store dub The Duke Incident.
A somewhat regular customer actually turns out to be a former band made of Kellys. The main characters all attend a show of the still performing musician, and it comes to light that Kelly really resents that he no longer plays.
Craig and newer employees are introduced to the higher ups in the company. They turn out to be dangerously uninformed on how to run a business, and wind up just being hilarious.
Halloween time, costume contest at the store judged by the lame higher up store manager. All the employees go to great lengths to make really well made costumes of contemporary monsters and villains, but since the manager is lame, the lamest costume wins, (he mistakes a Caligula costume for Julius Caesar).
Christmas time, lots of preparation goes into making the story look festive. When the power goes out, and nothing works, the employees are forced to improvise.
Big Harry Potter release in the store. Huge line wrapped around the store. Hilarious scuffle ensues over who was first in line. Jamie helps out the one patient and polite person on a deserted register in the back, and therefore makes them the first person to get the book. Also, the seeds of a potential villain are introduced in a creepy old man who frequents the porn aisle.
Jamies sister, May, is introduced and becomes interested in Craig. Jamie is taken aback at first and really resents it, and is acting very protective of her sister, but gradually accepts the seeds of what later becomes a budding relationship.
In the final episode of the season, we end of the cliffhanger of Jamie actually losing her job.

What We Need
A young group like us scrounges what they can and does as much as manageable to keep costs low. Still sometimes there are costs that are unavoidable, and for us those costs include:-PERSONNEL FEES=$1,000
-LIGHTING/GRIP/SOUND RENTAL=$2,000
TRAVEL FEES=$250
INSURANCE=$1,000
CONTINGENCY COST=$1,250
Although the record store at which we are shooting is kind enough not to charge us rental fees for the use of their facility they did ask us to cover the costs that they themselves would incur by helping us, which we thought was more than reasonable. We avoid much spending by owning or borrowing much of the equipment that we will need for this project, but there is still some equipment that we will need for this project that we do not own and cannot borrow. We will be carpooling to location to save on gasoline, but although that does mitigate our travel expenses, it does not eliminate them. Most the cast and the crew have agreed to work for deferred pay, and actually a percentage of the profits of the project itself, helping us reduce the cost to start the project. Our resourcefulness can only get us so far, for the rest; we need help.
