BIT BY BIT is a highly original and contemporary British drama, set in the gangster milieu of gritty working class Sheffield.

Aidan, petty gangster and small-time drug dealer , works the security in a massage parlor. He is forced to look more deeply at the consequences of his lifestyle when his 12-year-old daughter, Karly comes to live with him. 

While Karly desperately seeks to find a place of security in a world that has utterly betrayed her, Aidan finds himself caught up in a volatile and dangerous confrontation between the prostitutes and their pimps.

With tensions mounting and events swirling out of his control, Aidan is forced to make choices that will profoundly affect the lives of those around him and determine the fate of his daughter.

BIT BY BIT is a a deeply felt tale of the need for love. This uniquely British drama is both a harrowing journey into the heart of familial dysfunction and an ultimately uplifting and compassionate story of redemption and love.

I have always been drawn to the beauty in neglected people and neglected place, in the cracks and in the ruins. BIT BY BIT is full of such beauty. On the one hand a dark and harrowing tale, it's also a deeply moving one; it is both simple and profound, poetic and real. The characters and situations in the film are based on real people and real events. For six months I interviewed and researched the world, which the characters inhabit, places on the edges that lie outside the boundaries of civic and commercial aspirations. I used their real biographies and events as my inspiration.

An important aspect of creating the script was capturing the unreflective quality and naivety in the characters I had interviewed. Why do some individuals have little sense of agency or potential to change, to determine their paths in life? It's not to imply that they are disempowered, simply just as in life people are more equivocal, with no resolutions or insights into the outcome, just the moment as it is, as it unravels. 

DIRECTORS VISION

Cinematically aims to be aesthetically raw and visually stunning, creating a visually haunting world for the characters to exist in. It will be naturalistic yet detailed, straightforward yet fraught with dangers both apparent and hidden. The film is about having to face the consequences of your decisions and hopefully learn from them bit by bit. Capturing the characters personal quests in the film through private moments of observation, reflection, gestures and responses, forms the emotional heartbeat of the film., evoking the feeling of honesty and realism. We will understand the characters without necessarily completely understanding the motives for their actions, which I feel are often buried or contradictory. The final effect is strikingly profound, brutally honest and full of emotional resonance.
