What?
Anaximander & The Sea is to be a 30-40 minute, animated film with a heavy emphasis on the musical score. (My digital EP, Car is Pas't, will give you a good idea of the music-style.) It is an exploration of doubt, anxiety, irrational fear, confusion and ultimately, love and self-acceptance. I'd guess it will appeal to those with a love for the surreal, old video games, movies, classic cartoons & anime, film-scores, melodic singing (without auto-tune, which I passionately deplore), electronic music, and ... well ... Basically, it's for anyone who's into the same kind of stuff I am. But more than that, it's meant to inspire hope in those who've had (or may someday have) the same kind of struggles as I.
Who?
I drew a lot when I was a kid. I wanted to make comic books and cartoons when I got older. Instead, I made a lot of music, some videos & short films, played in a few bands, worked a handful of jobs I didn't like, went to college for Creative Writing and French, spent a little time studying in France, came back to Texas, fell madly in love (and still am), nearly graduated, dropped out (heart just wasn't in it any more) and despite being broke most of the time, and owing the college-loan folks a lot of money, here I am feeling more inspired by my life's experiences than ever before. In the past year, I finally started drawing and painting again, in addition to teaching myself a method of traditional animation using a combination of paper and digital tablet. I aim to pour every possible ounce of my inspiration, experience, education (both formal and informal), and creative skill into Anaximander & The Sea, but there's one big problem: As things are, I can't afford to spend the necessary time on this project if I'm going to keep myself fed and the bills paid.
Why?
Since I already have the required equipment and most of the art-supplies to complete this project, actual production cost will be next-to-nothing. However, I'll be producing everything myself, and I've learned quickly how time-consuming hand-drawn animation is. My goal is to complete the project within about a year, so there's no way I can work an unrelated, full-time job if I'm going to do this. Aside from the cost of any more art-supplies, digital distribution of the film and the soundtrack, and fulfilling perks for all you wonderful, beautiful patrons, it all comes down to cost-of-living. I just need to know I can keep a roof over my head while I finally make this big push toward my life-long dream, which is simply to earn an honest living doing the things I was born to do. If this campaign is even moderately successful, my dream will be that much closer to reality, and it will all be thanks to you!
I intend to promote and distribute the film and soundtrack all over the web, as well as submit my work to applicable film-festivals around the world (suggestions/advice are welcome!).
