Our Story
Due to the success of our first
Indiegogo campaign we managed to raise enough funds to fly out to Japan
and film the necessary interviews for the documentary aspects of the movie -
thanks to everyone who rallied to our cause!
But we still need to raise a
little more. Why? Because we want to bring the very powerful and very emotional
human story behind all the documented facts to life in the way only a drama can.
This will be our third and final
campaign here on Indiegogo. We intend the release of the film to coincide with
the 67th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki in August
2012, which means we HAVE to start filming within the next couple of months and
we have to cast before we can film. Time is running out, but with your help, we
can do it.
Synopsis:
Takashi Nagai, a descendent of a
Samurai family, a patriot and a pioneering scientist embarks upon a quest for
the ultimate truth - the meaning to life and death. It is a journey of
discovery that will change his life forever. An extraordinary story of
persecution, courage, faith and love unfolds as he uncovers Nagasaki’s legacy
and meets his own destiny.
Along the journey we meet Paul
Miki and the 26 martyrs of Japan and learn how the building of Urakami
cathedral - the grandest cathedral in the East came to symbolize the enduring
faith of the Nagasaki Christians. Then Takashi meets Midori, the woman who will
finally transform a sceptical man of intellect, into a man of the heart.
But on one sunny, August morning in 1945, everything vanishes in a blinding
flash of light, and the world is turned into a burning inferno. The second
atomic bomb to be used in warfare has just exploded over Nagasaki. Midori is
one of the estimated 80,000 souls killed instantly.
Now the scientist is forced to turn to God, as he must become a father and a
teacher, not just to his two young children, but to an orphaned nation, sick
and debilitated by war.
It would be his faith that would
guide him back to Atom bombed Nagasaki, and it would be this faith that would
inspire him to stay there and help rebuild a city from rubble and ash.
Having been diagnosed with leukaemia,
he dedicates the rest of his short life to promoting world peace through his
work as a writer. After a battle against censorship, his first book The Bells of
Nagasaki, becomes an instant bestseller though out Japan, as a people, defeated
and demoralised by war, re-discover through his words, the healing of power of
love.
The telling:
Directed by Ian and Dominic
Higgins, All That Remains is a docu-feature film that blends cinematic
storytelling with documentary filmmaking techniques to bring all the facts and
drama of an extraordinary life to the screen. In doing so, we invite our
audience on a personal journey alongside Dr. Takashi Nagai, as he embarks on
his life changing quest for the ultimate truth.
The drama aspects of the movie
will be realised through live-action dramatic reconstructions and animated sequences
which will enable us to see the world through the eyes of a man who was a
doctor and an artist. State of the art Special Effects will be utilized to
recreate the harrowing scenes of the atomic bombing and to portray the presence
of the supernatural.
The documentary aspects tells the
story through candid and intimate interviews with friends and family of Dr.
Nagai, including his grandson Tokusaburo Nagai,
Fr. Paul Glynn, author of A Song For
Nagasaki, and the Archbishop of Nagasaki, Joseph
Mitsuaki Takami, and will also include testimonies from survivors of the
atomic bombing.
We will be working alongside
students and staff at Nagasaki University as well as the head of the photo
division of the Nagasaki Atomic bomb museum, to faithfully recreate scenes of
pre-war Nagasaki and the atomic bombing. And Fr. Paul Glynn is on board as both
historical and religious advisor throughout the project.
