The Africa Oy Festival celebrates music and culture from Africa and its diaspora. Beginning in 1992 as a series of small gigs across Liverpool's city centre, the event has gone from strength to strength and is now the UK's largest African music festival. Africa Oy has always been a free event, remaining open and accessible to all.
With too many negative representations of Africa, Oy seeks to establish a balance and highlight the fantastic range of cultures, foods, music and artists that make this great continent so vibrant and inspiring. The festival is a truly international event that harnesses the spirit of multiculturalism and tolerance. Oy remains a registered charity and invests any and all funds raised directly into the festival.
The festival is also one of the most relaxed in the UK. We welcome individuals and families from all walks of life. Oy prides itself on being inclusive, attracting a wide range of cultures and helping to lay claim to Liverpools The World in One City status.
Even though we're now a staple of Liverpool's cultural calendar, funding isn't as available as it has been in years past and as the festival grows, so do our costs. As many of you may know, Oy 2011 was very nearly a ticketed event. Thankfully, after talks with the local authorities and further financial support including a fantastic response from festival goers, we managed to keep the festival open and free once again.
We're extremely grateful for the funding and sponsorship we've received but, as we strive to maintain both the calibre of the festival and further develop year round concerts and educational programmes, we need your help to keep Oy up and running. The more funding we can secure in advance of the festival, the better we can prepare for Oy 2012, our 20th anniversary.
We're not about profit. We're dedicated to bringing fantastic music to Liverpool and doing what we can to engage and enrich the community. Thank you to all for a fantastic festival this year and we look forward to seeing you all in 2012!
