This original piece, written/adapted by dramaturg Megan McClain, and directed by Dawn Monique Williams, examines the lives of four real Spanish and Latin American nuns during Spain's Golden Age. These are not merely cloistered women, but also a self-taught scholar, a devout prankster, an audacious playwright, and a cross-dressing rogue who serves as a soldier.
"Upon entering a convent, nuns were perceived as dead to the world. Yet it is the liveliness in their writing and the fierceness of their intelligence that captured my imagination," McClain said. "Unruly Mujeres weaves together a variety of texts created by four women from different convents to create a rich portrait of the imagination that thrived in their works despite the gender and religious hierarchies of the age," says McClain. "This piece is a celebration of four womens talents and daring. These are their stories in their own words."
