A Good Crease...

...is an insightful and humorous short film that looks at the basic human need to belong - somewhere, anywhere, regardless of how odd the fit.

A black single mom gives all she has to care for her mentally handicapped teenage son and her sweet, but semi-demented father.  When a white street punk breaks into their tiny NYC apartment a surprising act of grace changes all their lives forever.

In A Good Crease we explore the fundamental need to be connected with others.  Typically this means family, friends, co-workers, and "that guy at the hotdog stand."  But it's not always that simple.  What if being connected means believing there's more to the punk who broke into your home than his obscene tattoos and gang-fight scars?  Or believing a family whose men eat dinner in their boxer shorts isn't a way more dangerous place to be than living on the streets?  Add in a skeptical New York City cop who is romantically interested in the mom and...

The Cast:

Claire
Claire is a black, single mother in her late thirties.  She lives in a cramped fourth-floor, walk-up apartment in East Harlem, works twelve-hour days, and has no support in caring for her son and father.  Despair is an emotion high on her list.

Buster
Buster, Claire's twenty-year-old son, has a large scar running from his forehead to his chin.  His run-in with a truck has left him both talkative and confused, a combination Claire finds endearing - when it's not maddening.

Arthur
Arthur, Claire's father, is a retired railroad engineer who believes he is still on the job.  "A good crease is all a man's got these days," he declares, thus explaining his eating dinner in his boxer shorts to protect the crease in his pants.

Spitz
Spitz is a seventeen-year-old tattooed and pierced punk who lives on the streets.  He talks a good game, but he's really about as tough as his fake gang-fight scars and the dime-store cap gun tucked in his waistband.

Hadley
Hadley, a New York City cop with a sweet spot for Claire, responds to the report of a suspicious character and meets Spitz.  When Buster declares Spitz is his "Brother!" Hadley is skeptical.  Will law or love prove to be the rule of the day?

Why This Project Matters

Take a look around.  Chances are you'll find signs of others.  That's a good thing, even if the signs are no more than yesterday's unwashed dishes.  It means when push comes to shove you have someone to talk to, to hang out with, to hold onto.  Someone with whom you can share life's burdens.  We all need that.

Sadly, there are people who have no one.  When their push comes it brutally shoves them up against the wall and holds them there, often forcing them to give up.  But, it doesn't have to be this way.  A Good Crease speaks to the possibility of making room for others in our lives.  Especially if they're different - because, ultimately, we're all different.  Isn't it curious and hopeful that intertwined within our differences we share the common need to belong?

We hope you'll help us spread this message of hope through supporting the production of A Good Crease.

How We Will Use The Money We Raise

The shoot is scheduled for February, 2011, in Kansas City.  We've put together a simple, but complete budget for the production costs.  The Producer, Writer, and Director are donating our services to this project because of our commitment to its message.  We're confident we can attract professional actors and crew to work at reduced rates on a film with a positive social message, but there will still be expenses involved.  Here are the highlights:
