Our Story

L5 is a hard science fiction miniseries being developed in Chicago by Hemogoblin, a unique collective of visual effects artists and writer/directors.  It tells the story of a crew returning from deep space to find that 200 years have passed, and no one is left to greet them.  It's a story that explores the deepest reaches of human hopes and fears, technology, philosophy, and drama.

For the past year, we have been working on the pilot episode around the clock, pushing it to the limits of what is technically feasible on such a small budget, often at the expense of many other basic life necessities.  We ran into a wall with our funding, and our ability to produce a score that matched the visuals in terms of production value.  We realized that our usual volunteer-based, ultra low budget avenues weren't going to achieve the level of creative inspiration we needed.

Then Simon Ashdown offered to help, and we want to help him help us.

The Impact

We are on a very tight timetable.  Our sound designer has already been paid and has a block of time in November, but they need the completed score.  Here is what happens if we don't raise our funds by the 17th:  we can't get the score produced in a timely manner, and our sound designer (who also has to eat) has to take on other projects.  This kind of little delay can send a project into the territory of years to complete as we battle for overlapping schedules, as volunteers lose interest and energy, it becomes like herding cats.  We want to get this thing finished, and finished soon so that everyone can enjoy it, the sooner we can begin pitching it to networks and get the whole series produced.

We are also very, very tired, having been working 80 hour weeks for a year now to pull this off.  Help us get some sleepy night night time.

What We Need & What You Get

We need $1200 to add to the $300 we still have left in our budget for score.  This will go towards covering studio and production expenses.  What you get, aside from a warm fuzzy feeling on the inside, is anything from public credit on the website and film, to a copy of the score with high quality production artwork prints.  You also help make this a reality, which makes you extremely awesome.  If we make more than $1200, it will help us cover the expense of perks for our donors!

Other Ways You Can Help

Blog! Tweet!  Facebook!  Heck, even bugging people on Omegle works (we've resorted to this in the past).  Post it on reddit, post it on digg, and let us know if you do on our facebook fan page!  We try to reward aggressive pro-bono marketing of this kind with swag, whenever we can.  Swag will likely be sent out when the pilot is finished.  Swag is good, it looks nice on your desk/wall/roomba.
