UNDERSEA VOYAGER PROJECT & GLOBAL REEF
~ 30-MILE-DIVE with Scott Cassell ~
On September 17, 2011, undersea-explorer and combat diver Scott Cassell will try something thats never been done before: a non-stop underwater dive from Catalina Island to Los Angeles.
30-Mile-Dive is a world-record SCUBA attempt that will and test the boundaries of human endurance. Scott's goal is to inspire action by pushing the limits of what we think is possible, and to get you in the fight.
Scott Cassell is putting his life on the line for a worthy cause.
Global Reef is making a film about it. And we need your help to make
it happen.
If we were to see the devastation that has occurred in the ocean - as if it were on land - we would be horrified. My value in life was found when I discovered the ocean. When I see people harming it, I take that personally. And Im a man of action. ~ Scott Cassell
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Having spent much of his life underwater, Scott has seen our oceans change firsthand. Waters once teeming with sea life are almost unrecognizable today. In just a couple of decades, apex predator populations have been decimated. With large tuna populations on the brink of extinction, and countless millions of sharks killed for fins every year, this is an ecosystem on the verge of collapse.
It's time to stop ignoring our oceans.
Undersea Voyager Project & Global Reef invite you on the trip of a lifetime. Join us- and come explore the underwater world with Scott in his personal submarine. This is an opportunity to support the project and participate in a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Become part of the team, and make a contribution to help get the word out. Whether you just pre-purchase the DVD or become a crew member on the expedition, we need your involvement. Challenge your friends to get in the sub, and spread the word across social networks we haven't reached yet. Together we can make this happen.
THE FILM
Scott has teamed up with Global Reef to produce a documentary film about the 30-Mile-Dive expedition. Global Reef brings a dedicated team of media and ocean experts, with professional divers and an award-winning production crew.
Well be shooting above and below the ocean surface, with underwater cinematographers, fixed underwater HD cameras and - considering a portion of Scotts swim takes place at night - specialized Low Light Camera technology. We'll be blogging live and tracking as we go, with live mapping from our partners at www.bloosee.com
Ultimately, 30-Mile-Dive tells a compelling story about the life of Scott Cassell, a military specialist and combat diver, who has turned his fighting spirit towards saving the ocean. With this attempt at a record-breaking dive, Scott takes us into his domain- the ocean depths- to share his experiences in the changing seas.
Global Reef is currently in discussions with broadcasters regarding a timely release of the film.
30-Mile-Dive will be represented in Cannes, France, at MIPCOM 2011.
THE RISKS
Scott, his team and Global Reef consider safety to be the primary mission. It is possible, however, that Scott will not complete the world-record attempt. Inherent dangers include: hypothermia (24 hours in 67-69 degree water), decompression sickness, equipment failure, extraordinary currents, physical exhaustion, swimming through a known great-white strike zone for an extended period, or an attack by Humboldt squid.
EQUIPMENT
Scott will be swimming underwater, at a depth of about 20-25 feet, for up to 24 hours.
He plans to use:
- A towed array that will support live-feed cameras, experiments and a hydrophone (acoustic) shark attractor, to see how many (or how few) sharks are present in the area.
- An Aqueon (a wing-like diver propulsion fin), & a highly efficient rEVO mixed gas closed-circuit re-breather.
- A precautionary fence will be towed underneath him to prevent shark strikes from below.
- A military-grade electronically heated wetsuit and chain mail anti-shark suit for protection.
- A flexible dive bell for taking breaks underwater (eating, drinking, warming up, &as an emergency retreat system)
- 'Deep Sea Power & Light' cameras and lights powered with Red and White light technology.
FUNDING
We just completed a successful first-round of funding on Kickstarter. With the expedition less than four weeks away, we are using this second round of funding to cover some of the expedition and production expenses. Donations are tax deductible in the United States, as allowed by law, through Scott's non-profit organization Undersea Voyager Project [ 501(c)3 ].
Funds raised in this indiegogo campaign will be used for direct expedition expenses, including support for the team during filming, pre-dive training and travel, documentary film production, fuel and other costs associated with the attempt.
WHAT WE NEED & WHAT YOU GET
We need a crowd of people to support us. So far - this is working. Our initial $5,000 campaign on kickstarter was a success, and we are deeply grateful for our corporate sponsors. Now we need another $10,000 for the expedition to run smoothly. Depending on how much you donate, we'll give you a corresponding reward- starting with a ring tone for a dollar, to a full day of Submarine School with Scott, where you and a friend will learn to fly a real submarine!
OTHER WAYS YOU CAN HELP
Crowd-sourcing is all about connecting with the masses and reaching people we don't know yet. We are putting our efforts into this, to help save the ocean. Scott is putting his life on the line. Will you help us - at least by emailing this indiegogo link to everyone you know? Paste it on Facebook, and tell your friends about it. This is the sort of project we can do together. Expand our social network by inviting your network of friends and co-workers to take part. Thanks!
